Independent nonprofit newsroom Pittsburgh’s Public Source yesterday published significant reporting on how the two dominant health systems in its coverage area, Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), are implementing artificial intelligence (AI).

“AI tools are becoming more commonplace in Pittsburgh hospitals, promising productivity gains for practitioners amid the nursing crisis,” begins the report. “But to local hospital employees, enduring understaffing and burnout, another solution is clear: Hire more workers.”

Lance Lindauer, executive director of the Partnership to Advance Responsible Technology, told the news organization that hospital systems are strategizing AI use around three main goals: improving diagnostic imaging, enhancing patient safety and reducing administrative burden.

The article dives into both the practical and ethical use of AI in health care, and describes the ways in which AHN and UPMC are currently using the tech. Read it here.
