Community Health Systems hospital portfolio continues to shrink

A subsidiary of Community Health Systems last week signed a definitive agreement to sell “substantially all of the assets” of four Northwest Health hospitals in Arkansas, along with their associated outpatient centers and practices, to Freeman Health System of Joplin, Mo., for $112 million.

The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026.

Community Health Systems said the hospitals are “among the additional potential divestitures discussed on the Company’s fourth quarter and end of year 2025 earnings call and in subsequent public appearances.”

Community Health Systems, of Franklin, Tenn., has been rapidly shedding hospitals from its portfolio this year. In February, it divested 186-bed Regional Hospital of Scranton and 122-bed Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pa., along with 369-bed Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) General Hospital, to affiliates of 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Tenor Health Foundation for $33 million cash plus a $15 million promissory note from the buyer, and sold Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville Hospital and its ER to Vanderbilt Health. In January, it sold Crestwood Medical Center to Huntsville Hospital Health System.
