Jacksonville TV station WTLV-TV reported last week on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) at the city’s HCA Florida Memorial Hospital.
“The goal isn’t to replace doctors, but support them,” said the anchor introducing the piece.
Interviewed in the report was the hospital’s Eric Troup, DO, who said the facility currently is using AI to help with behind-the-scenes logistical matters such as scheduling, alerting care teams and improving workflow efficiency.
But Dr. Troup told the TV station that something he is “most looking forward to” is “AI scribe” functionality that will alleviate him of the need to be typing on the computer and thus spend more engaged time with patients as an ambient AI tool records and syncs the conversation with the hospital’s electronic health record.
The reporter noted privacy and accuracy concerns surrounding the use of AI in healthcare settings but said the hospital’s use of AI is subject to “careful vetting” and that physicians will essentially check the technology’s work before applying its findings and recommendations to patients.
Dr. Troup also observed that AI will benefit rural hospitals by providing access and availability to information generated at distant academic medical centers.
