HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital tomorrow will welcome members of the community for a free, family-friendly behind-the-scenes open house event to celebrate the opening of its new Center for Advanced Surgery.

“Guests will have a unique opportunity to step inside an area of the hospital most people don’t often see, the operating room, and experience firsthand the advanced technology and thoughtfully designed spaces that support safe, high-quality patient care,” stated the Decatur, Ill., hospital.

The Center for Advanced Surgery, part of the hospital’s multiyear $90 million renovation project, features four ORs, two new GI suites, expanded and redesigned pre-op and PACU spaces that better accommodate patients’ families, and a relocated sterile processing department that is now adjacent to the surgical suite.

According to local TV station WAND, the size of the hospital’s ORs have nearly doubled to 700 square feet. Previously, they were 400 square feet.

“Every room can be set up for each patient and not specialized for each procedure or specialty. It can be used for any specialty at any time,” Director for Surgical Services Tedi Simer told WAND, adding that the new ORs are “fully integrated,” enabling nurses to control all equipment from an in-room touch panel without needing to enter the sterile field to do so.

Also coming this year as part of the renovation are a “renewed Chapel” and upgraded inpatient units.

The surgical suite renovation intends to “position St. Mary’s as the surgical destination for Decatur.”
