Marshall Health Network (MHN) announced it is “aligning its systemwide surgical capabilities” with the creation of a new "surgical services service line" that it says will be “designed to strengthen coordination, quality and growth across surgical programs throughout the health system.”

Anesthesiologist Anthony Dempsey, MD, was named MHN’s physician executive for surgical services, and will lead the clinical strategy for the new service line, reporting to MHN’s chief operating officer and chief physician executive. Marshall Health says Dr. Dempsey will work closely with Phillip Conley, vice president of perioperative surgical services, to form a “dyad leadership model that integrates clinical and operational leadership across the network.”

“The creation of a systemwide surgical service line allows us to align our surgical teams, technology and resources to better serve patients across the region,” said MHN Chief Operating Officer Regina Campbell. “Dr. Dempsey’s leadership and clinical expertise will help strengthen surgical quality, drive innovation and support continued growth across our surgical programs.”

Dr. Dempsey will help guide strategic planning, quality initiatives and operational integration across surgical specialties. “His responsibilities include advancing surgical innovation, improving perioperative care, supporting recruitment and development of surgical specialists, and optimizing operating room performance across MHN facilities,” states the health network.

Dr. Dempsey and Mr. Conley will also collaborate with leaders across MHN and the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine to support surgical education, research and innovation aligned with NHN’s academic mission.

MHN serves patients across West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and southeastern Ohio.
