Wake Tech, North Carolina’s largest community college, last week lifted the final beam on what it says will be one of the nation’s “largest and most comprehensive simulation hospitals.”
Wake Tech said the Perry Family Simulation Hospital, scheduled to open on its Perry Health Sciences Campus in Raleigh in fall 2027, will provide “realistic multidisciplinary training for a variety of healthcare specialties, strengthening the pipeline of skilled healthcare professionals in our community.”
Wake Tech President Scott Ralls, PhD, said the three‑story, 106,000-square-foot facility will provide students with an “unparalleled, hands‑on learning environment that mirrors real‑world clinical settings.” The simulated environment will include a patient check‑in area to an emergency department, operating rooms, imaging and other diagnostic testing labs, a nursing center and patient rooms.
“This facility will prepare students in a true interdisciplinary setting,” said Wake Tech Executive Vice President and Interim Health Sciences Provost Nicole Reaves, EdD. “Not only will they learn skills in their respective fields, but also how to collaborate across the specialties, which they will have to do in the real world.”
The facility, funded through a $126 million bond approved by voters in 2022, includes infrastructure and road improvements and a four-level parking deck.
The simulation hospital will result from the Wake III Partnership, a collaboration among Wake Tech, Wake County and WakeMed Health & Hospitals, which worked collectively with the City of Raleigh to establish a Health & Education District that created a framework for land transactions to allow the college to expand.
