Prisma Health makes progress on 129,000-square-foot ASC project in Tenn., but approval not yet secured

Tennessee newspaper The Daily Times reports that Prisma Health is “one approval away” from constructing a 129,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center on land near the Royal Oaks subdivision in Maryville, Tenn., after the city’s Planning Commission approved a rezoning and land use reclassification request last week.

The commissioners are consider rezoning an approximately 16-acre parcel on a former golf course from residential to commercial use in the Maryville’s Business/Transportation zone. “Because the surgery center as presented exceeds the city’s 10,000-square-foot maximum for construction within a commercial zone, Prisma Health officials will need to receive a variance from the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals in order to proceed further,” the newspaper reports.

Prisma Health’s Blount Memorial Hospital has owned the parcel since 2013. It has sat vacant since 2018, when the golf course operator to which it had been leasing the land ceased operations at the site, reports the newspaper.

There are questions about the site involving utilities and infrastructure as well as a property owners’ association. Take a deep dive into the complicated situation by reading The Daily Timesfull report.
