The first surgery was performed at the new DISC Surgery Center at Palm Beach in West Palm Beach, Fla., last week by Founding Surgeon and Medical Director Jason M. Cuéllar, M.D., Ph.D.—a minimally invasive lumbar foraminotomy on an active 82-year-old who had been limited by radiating low back pain caused by foraminal stenosis and lumbar nerve root compression. DISC states that the patient was “walking comfortably shortly afterward and discharged less than two hours later.”

The new 15,618-square-foot ASC, which includes overnight private recovery suites with “hospital-level monitoring” for patients who require them postoperatively, is accepting patients for advanced outpatient spine, orthopedic and interventional pain procedures. It features three operating suites, seven preoperative rooms and five PACU bays, as well as a full-service musculoskeletal clinic with three exam rooms.

Dr. Cuéllar will lead the ASC’s clinical program while continuing to care for patients through his South Florida practice Cuéllar Spine. DISC states the facility will extend Dr. Cuéllar’s “comprehensive model of care by bringing patient evaluation, advanced diagnostics, surgery, rehabilitation and recovery together in one coordinated outpatient setting.”

In addition to the minimally invasive spine procedure, Dr. Cuéllar treated a 74-year-old woman injured in a motor vehicle accident using autologous alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M) therapy. The regenerative biologic treatment utilizes the patient's own blood-derived proteins to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain in the spine and other joints, offering appropriately selected patients another nonsurgical treatment option.

This week, the facility announced its roster of physician partners, which include 11 additional spine surgeons, four orthopedics/total joints surgeons and a vascular surgeon.

DISC Surgery Centers are part of Trias Global, a clinically integrated network of healthcare providers built and managed by DISC parent company TriasMD.
