Michigan has become the 22nd U.S. state to pass a law mandating the use of a surgical smoke evacuation system during every plume-producing procedure.
On July 23, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed HB 4779 into law, making Michigan the 22nd state to enact legislation to protect staff and patients from surgical smoke. The new law will go into effect one year from the date of signing. Read a PDF of the full bill here.
The news comes on the heels of Maryland passing similar legislation in May. Michigan and Maryland join Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia in going surgical smoke-free.
