U.S. News & World Report has released its 2026-2027 edition of Best Hospitals, an annual study that “helps patients and their families make informed, data-driven healthcare decisions in consultation with their medical providers and care teams.”
This year’s edition highlights 505 Best Regional Hospitals across 49 states and Washington, D.C., “that have demonstrated superior patient outcomes for a variety of common procedures and conditions.” It has also included “regional specialty rankings” for cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; orthopedics; and rehabilitation. The specialty rankings “allow patients to easily identify which nearby, accessible hospitals excel in the specific areas they need most, bridging the gap between national excellence and local accessibility,” states the publication.
The publication is publicizing rankings in metropolitan areas that host five or more Best Regional Hospitals, along with the top-ranked hospital(s) in each of those metro areas:
- New York (28 Best Regional Hospitals: Mount Sinai Hospital, New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell and NYU Langone Hospitals (tied)
- Los Angeles (25): Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center (tied)
- Chicago (20): Northwestern Medicine-Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Rush University Medical Center (tied)
- Houston (14): Houston Methodist Hospital
- Atlanta (13): Emory University Hospital
- Dallas-Fort Worth (13): UT Southwestern Medical Center
- Philadelphia (13): Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
- San Francisco (13): UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center
- Washington, D.C. (12): MedStar Washington Hospital Center

U.S. News recognized 73 Best Regional Hospitals for Community Access for their “demonstrated track record of providing high-quality care to a patient population that includes underserved and vulnerable groups in their local communities.”

U.S. News states that its rankings are based on an analysis of “each hospital’s performance based on measures such as risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and patient experience,” while its Best Hospitals Specialty Rankings methodology and Procedures & Conditions Ratings methodology “measure patient outcomes using data from over 800 million records of patient care.” Among this year’s other methodology refinements are an increased focus on “risk-adjusted outcome measures.”
The rankings and ratings are published in the U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals 2027 Guidebook.”
