University of Rochester Medicine’s Highland Hospital has opened a 26-bed Short-Stay Post-Operative Unit to provide specialized care and monitoring for patients expected to be discharged within 24 hours.

The unit, located on the fourth floor of Highland’s Southeast Tower, offers a “focused setting for post-surgical care,” stated the health system. It features “modern patient care spaces, state-of-the-art technology, and a flexible gym where short-stay orthopedic and joint-replacement patients can begin rehabilitation after surgery,” with the hospital adding that the gym can be “converted into a patient room as needed, providing added flexibility as patient needs change.”

“This gives us greater flexibility to care for patients while making the most of our hospital resources,” stated Maura Snyder, chief operating officer of Highland Hospital. “It will also help us address our high daily census by creating capacity specifically for short-stay surgical patients and enabling us to better match our resources to patients’ needs.”
