A new report in Delaware Business Now dives deeply into what the media outlet describes as a “turf war” between two of the state’s health systems for preeminence in the southern part of The First State.
Wilmington-based ChristianaCare dominates more populous northern Delaware, while the incumbent health system in more rural southern Delaware is Dover-based Bayhealth.
The publication reports that Bayhealth this month challenged two proposed ChristianaCare campuses in Georgetown and Camden in a letter to the Delaware Healthcare Commission and the Delaware Health Resources Board, claiming that ChristianaCare’s proposals “could run afoul of a new law signed this summer meant to curb the involvement of for-profit enterprise in nonprofit healthcare.”
It reports that the battle for dominance in the southern part of the state has accelerated “as retirees from across the Northeast flock to Delaware’s coastline,” bringing with them greater demand for medical services.
