The University of Colorado Anschutz (CU Anschutz) has published an article that describes how its team of hospitalists is partnering with surgeons to make the patient experience and process for major procedures “easier, safer, and more accessible.”

The Medicine Consult Service is a service line within the Division of Hospital Medicine at the CU Anschutz Department of Medicine under which hospitalists co-manage patients with other specialty physicians, including orthopedic surgeons and geriatric trauma surgeons, throughout patients’ stays at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital (UCH). The service line was founded in Oct. 2024, when “the hospital medicine division furthered its partnership with the CU Anschutz Department of Orthopedics by establishing a co-management agreement with the department’s Adult Spine Division,” writes CU Anschutz.

The service line is co-directed by Assistant Professor of Medicine-Hospital Medicine Amanda Johnson, MD, and Assistant Professor of Hospital Medicine Philip Vatterott, MD. “What makes these collaborations unique is how two distinct departments are uniting their expertise to customize the hospital experience for major surgery patients,” stated Dr. Vatterott.
