Joint Commission and New Leaders preconference workshops on tap today

While the main program of Periop Leader Week starts tomorrow, many perioperative leaders are here on Sunday to participate in two highly compelling three-hour preconference workshops.

Starting at 2:00 pm and running through 5:00 pm, these workshops will focus on two fundamental topics in the ever-growing and ever-evolving field of perioperative leadership.

In Meeting Room 203 at the Savannah Convention Center, the spotlight will be on the latest in survey and accreditation preparation with the Joint Commission preconference workshop. Led by Robert Campbell, PharmD, BCSCP, Joint Commission’s vice president of accreditation/certification program development and accreditation management, perioperative leaders will hear straight from the source about Joint Commission's latest survey and accreditation requirements, policies and procedures. Assembled perioperative leaders will get a better sense and clearer picture of exactly what Joint Commission currently expects from them, and receive guidance on questions, concerns or ambiguities that require resolution.

As Dr. Campbell recently told us, “We are undergoing massive transformation at Joint Commission. Our entire approach is different. The way we conduct surveys is different. We’ll talk about that transformation, and some new things we have available for organizations to use for accreditation. We’ll also go over the top-scored standards based on what I’ll be talking about. We’ll talk about where Joint Commission is headed based on the final rule from CMS and the revisions we have to make to our standards, and what that’s going to look like. We are also finding that organizations are boxing themselves in and creating expectations that are way above anything we’d ever want, so we’ll talk about that as well.”

Simultaneously, over in Room 200, the New Leaders preconference workshop will take place. Five experienced perioperative leaders with a deep sense of mission about helping the next generation grow and thrive in their careers will assemble to provide young leaders with valuable insight, advice, guidance and perspective.

The workshop will consist of mini-talks from each leader, an hour-long “Ask Me Anything” attendee-driven Q&A discussion, and five topical and interactive roundtable discussions through which each attendee will rotate over the third and final hour.

The perioperative leaders who will lead the workshop are a stellar group:

  • Malcolm Ladines, MS, MLS, BSN, RN, CSSBB, CQIA, business director of perioperative services at Baylor University Medical Center
  • Rebecca McKenzie, DNP, MBA, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, enterprise assistant vice president of perioperative and procedural services with UK HealthCare
  • De André Delsol, MOL, CHL, CRCST, founder and CEO of Chike Healthcare Partners
  • Leiran Cornish, MBA-HM, BSN, RN, LSSGB, assistant vice president of surgical services with St. Joseph’s Health
  • Michelle Bassel, MBA, BSN, RN, director of perioperative and women’s services with Dignity Health - Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital

All five of these professionals truly care about the next generation of perioperative leadership, and they’re excited to spend their time, experience and knowledge with up-and-coming leaders who can use some mentorship.
