Acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, N.Y., has launched a phased opening of nine new OR suites on the second floor of its four-story Feil Family Pavilion to expand access to advanced procedures at its campus.

Five new ORs are now operational, with four more slated to come online later this year. At double the size of some of Mount Sinai South Nassau’s existing ORs, the hospital stated, larger surgical teams will be able to work with advanced technology in the new rooms to “offer procedures that previously required patients to travel to Manhattan or the North Shore.” The facility is Mount Sinai Health System’s flagship hospital on Long Island.

“The spacious design and new technology incorporated into the surgical suites will allow our surgeons to operate in a setting that will maximize their expertise while enhancing patient safety, comfort, and outcomes,” stated the hospital’s interim present, Joshua Kugler, MD.

Two of the nine surgical suites are designed and built for advanced cardiac surgery, including open-heart surgery, and will be overseen by surgeons from the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital at The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.

Another two of the new suites are hybrid ORs that combine medical imaging equipment including fluoroscopy C-arms, CT scanners, and MRI equipment, with surgical equipment to “create an environment where surgeons can perform imaging, biopsies, diagnostic procedures, and surgery in the same room” without needing to move a patient between imaging and surgical suites.

Among the features of the new ORs:

  • open floor plans
  • high ceilings
  • enhanced lighting
  • robotic surgical assistants
  • three-dimensional image-guided surgical systems for minimally invasive and traditional procedures.

The ORs are located one floor above the Fennessy Family Emergency Department. A dedicated elevator is in place to transport ED patients who require immediate surgery to the new ORs.

The new operating suites, which involved more than a decade of planning, are part of a $500 million capital improvement initiative at the hospital that also includes a patient pavilion, a $50 million expansion and renovation of the ED, 40 critical care suites, a power plant, and a parking garage.

More than 12,000 surgeries are already performed each year at Mount Sinai South Nassau, which expects to increase scheduling capacity for same-day, elective, and emergency surgeries via the nine new ORs.
