Newsweek has published its rankings of the World’s Greenest Hospitals of 2026. The inaugural edition of the program highlights the 250 hospitals that the publication finds are “leading the way in sustainability by reducing emissions, conserving water and improving waste management.”
Newsweek, which partnered with data gathering and visualization firm Statista on the program, intends the ranking to serve as a “benchmark for the industry that demonstrates that environmental responsibility and clinical excellence can go hand in hand, helping create a healthier future for patients and communities alike.”
Facilities in 36 countries are represented on the list, which is based on a “comprehensive multi-pillar methodology that combines quantitative sustainability performance data with qualitative indicators of leadership, recognition and transparency.” Those variously weighted pillars are sustainability performance data, expert recommendations, certifications and accreditations, achievements and recognition, commitments and pledges, and reporting transparency.
The 250 hospitals that made the cut were then assigned “performance indicators ranging from three to five leaves, with five leaves denoting the strongest relative sustainability performance among ranked hospitals.” Newsweek states that the leaf designations are “intended to distinguish varying levels of performance within this highly selected group.” You can read much more about the methodology on the rankings site.
