NBC Chicago reports that Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, Ill., has suspended its Level II trauma center designation due “significantly” declining trauma volumes.
Owner Prime Healthcare, calling it a “carefully considered decision,” stated to the TV station that the hospital “has recently treated an average of only two major trauma patients per month.” It added that Saint Joseph Hospital will still operate a full-service 24/7 emergency department.
“Every patient seeking emergency care will continue to receive immediate evaluation, stabilization, and treatment,” the statement said. “Ambulances will continue transporting patients to Saint Joseph Hospital, and patients requiring specific Level II trauma services will continue to receive the most appropriate care at Level II facilities under established EMS protocols.”
