A special article titled “Advancing Perioperative Medicine: A Multistakeholder Perspective” published in the Online First edition of Anesthesiology, the peer-reviewed medical journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), states that “anesthesiology is uniquely positioned to influence the continued development of perioperative medicine.”

In a press release about the article, ASA stated that “advancing perioperative medicine” is “central” to the future of healthcare, describing perioperative medicine as an “evolving multi-specialty movement” that “aligns care throughout the ‘surgical journey.’” It states that “perioperative medicine is emerging as a transformative, comprehensive, system-wide approach to patient care before, during, and after surgery – that reduces complication rates and hospital days, provides better health outcomes, and improves health system performance.”

Participants in the article included representatives from 14 professional societies and organizations.
