WVU Medicine Fairmont Medical Center (FMC) has completed its brand-new surgical services unit. Set to open on Oct. 19, FMC’s four new operating rooms and new sterile processing suite are the result of an investment of more than $27 million.
“Today marks far more than the opening of four new operating rooms, it marks the return of surgical services to Marion County and another significant step in rebuilding Fairmont Medical Center into the full-service medical center this community deserves,” stated FMC Chief Operating Officer Aaron Yanuzo.
WVU Medicine departments that will expand their surgical services to FMC include cardiology, endoscopy, gastroenterology, orthopedics including hand surgery and total joint replacement, otolaryngology, pain management; plastic/cosmetic/reconstructive, podiatry; and urology.
WVU Medicine adds that “for physicians, the new operating rooms provide the resources needed to practice locally while remaining connected to the broader resources and expertise of a large academic medical center.”
WVU Medicine reopened FMC as a campus of WVU Hospitals in June 2020 after it had closed three months before. Thus began an ongoing effort to rebuild its capabilities and “expand access to healthcare services in the surrounding community,” stated the health system. FMC has previously added a skilled nursing unit, expanded imaging services, and the WVU Cancer Institute at Fairmont Medical Center.
Further planned expansions at FMC include a new three-story support services and ambulatory clinic building.
