A lot of change is emanating from Joint Commission, and you can learn all about it during a three-hour Joint Commission Preconference Workshop at Periop Leader Week!

Robert Campbell, PharmD, BCSCP, Vice President of Accreditation/Certification Program Development and Accreditation Management, Joint Commission

On Sunday, Oct. 4, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm ET, you’ll hear straight from the source about Joint Commission’s latest survey and accreditation requirements, policies and procedures. Robert Campbell, PharmD, BCSCP, Joint Commission’s Vice President of Accreditation/Certification Program Development and Accreditation Management, will give hospital, health system and ASC perioperative leaders a better sense and clearer picture of exactly what Joint Commission currently expects from them, and provide guidance on questions, concerns or ambiguities that require resolution. (Register for the preconference workshop and Periop Leader Week here.)

There will be a healthy amount of new information for perioperative leaders to learn about and consider at the workshop.

“We are undergoing massive transformation at Joint Commission,” Dr. Campbell tells Periop Leader Network. “Our entire approach is different. The way we conduct surveys is different. We’ll talk about that transformation, and some new things we have available for organizations to use for accreditation. We’ll also go over the top-scored standards based on what I’ll be talking about. We’ll talk about where Joint Commission is headed based on the final rule from CMS and the revisions we have to make to our standards, and what that’s going to look like. We are also finding that organizations are boxing themselves in and creating expectations that are way above anything we’d ever want, so we’ll talk about that as well.”

The learning objectives for the session will give you a further sense of what will be on tap at the workshop:

  • Describe the industry pressures driving accreditation’s shift from compliance to improvement.
  • Explain the core objectives of Accreditation 360.
  • Summarize the burden reduction: 1,551 → 774 requirements and 14 National Performance Goals.
  • Differentiate the SAFER® risk report from the new SAFEST™ strengths report.
  • Identify the 2026 survey enhancements, including the redesigned Executive Summary and Learning Series.
  • Interpret national benchmarking data to compare performance against peers and system facilities.
  • Analyze the top physical environment findings in life safety, utilities, and hazardous materials.
  • Recognize the highest-volume clinical risks in infection prevention, medication, and readiness.
  • Apply Evidence of Standards Compliance best practices to sustain post-survey compliance.
