According to the Charlotte Business Journal (CBJ), OrthoCarolina has officially broken ground on its first standalone orthopedics ASC, to be located in the Steele Creek neighborhood of Charlotte, N.C. It’s expected to open by the end of 2027.
Becker’s reports the center will have four ORs and two rooms for nonsurgical procedures, and will employ 65 to 75 full-time staff members and 16 to 20 physicians. Among the procedures to be performed at the site according to Becker’s are carpal tunnel releases, rotator cuff repairs, total hip and knee replacements, spinal decompressions and neck fusions. OrthoCarolina did not disclose the project’s total cost to Becker’s, which noted that the physician-owned-and-led practice sold its physical therapy business in 2025 to help fund its outpatient expansion.
OrthoCarolina CEO Leo Spector, MD, MBA, told CBJ that the 15,000-square-foot ASC’s location in the growing Steele Creek area made the project a priority. “It’s a way for us to be able to expand access to high-quality, lower-cost care for the greater Charlotte market,” Spector said. “The beauty of that is really twofold: First, it’s the sub-specialization of care, because all we’re doing at that facility is orthopedics, and so like anything, if you do the same thing over and over again, you do it really well. Second, it really allows us to lower the cost because we don’t have to worry about an entire hospital...We can simply focus on outpatient orthopedics.”
